Today, my three year old daughter was part of a neat experience at her preschool. All of the kids were allowed to bring their bikes and helmets to school. A group came to the school and met with all of the kids – explaining bike safety, checking for proper helmet fits, and showing … Continue Reading >

Movie Challenges Notion of Justice

On June 15, 2011, in Personal Injury, by K. Lindsay Rakers

The recent documentary, “Hot Coffee” by Susan Saladoff has officially been released and is being shown on HBO starting June 27th. I encourage everyone to watch this movie. The movie reveals what really happened to Stella Liebeck, the woman who spilled McDonald’s coffee on herself and was crucified in the media. Big businesses jumped on this case and started a media frenzy. The movie provides incredible insight into who started this drama and why. More importantly, it tells Stella’s realy … Continue Reading >

Prominent Grocery Store Denies Rights to Same Sex Workers

On June 7, 2011, in Community, Discrimination, Gay and Lesbian Rights, by K. Lindsay Rakers

Recently, I heard from a man who was going through a tough and unfair process with his domestic partner. His partner does, and has for a long time, work at a grocery store chain. This store will not permit these two kind gentlemen health insurance rights – despite the new civil union law. You would know the name if you recognize it. They live in Missouri but this is a chain that has locations in Illinois. Due to the Illinois … Continue Reading >

Joplin – Picking up the Pieces Part II

On June 2, 2011, in Community, Personal Injury, by K. Lindsay Rakers

Throughout my second day of volunteering at The Bridge, I was even more moved. As of today, all of the Joplin residents are accounted for – I think that is incredible. As I walked around through the destruction trying to get people to take bug spray and suntan lotion from me, people refused. They were too focused on their task at hand despite their sunburnt and irritated skin. I witnessed on reunion – a man walked into The Bridge and … Continue Reading >

On May 31, 2011, in Community, Insurance, by K. Lindsay Rakers

Today, I joined a group of fellow MATA (Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys) members in Joplin, Missouri to provide free legal advice to the recent tornado victims. We were actually set up at The Bridge – away from the debris in the “safe” zone. But the impact of this disaster was written all over the faces of the people here.
We provided free legal advice to many people today. Some of the issues we addressed were: (1) My place of … Continue Reading >

On May 19, 2011, in Discrimination, Personal Injury, by K. Lindsay Rakers

“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” – Winston Churchill
The Illinois legislature has recently enacted the Illinois Religious Freedom and Civil Union Act (“Civil Union Act” henceforth) which creates a separate status for same-sex couples equivalent in benefits. Appropriate planning, knowledge and information will help you as a same-sex partner arm yourself against the additional burdens attached and conflicts with Federal law. Regardless, the recognition of same-sex relationships by the … Continue Reading >

On May 16, 2011, in Personal Injury, by K. Lindsay Rakers

Eagleton United States Courthouse, operated in partnership with a private, nom-profit organization. The Judicial Learning Center ist he only educational center in the United States devoted to the judicial process in the Federal Courts. it is dedicated to promoting public understanding of the … Continue Reading >

Small Ruling, Big Justice in Car Crash Case

On May 11, 2011, in Auto Accident, Personal Injury, by K. Lindsay Rakers

Sometimes lawyer win huge verdicts in cases or win crucial motions in court – and we all like to discuss these “wins” because it reinforces that we are doing good. If all of us plaintiff lawyers continue to win, we know that we are doing our job in standing up for the little guys, against the big guys.
Today, I had what most would be considered a small motion in front of a Judge on an Illinois car crash case. … Continue Reading >
