Dangerous Denture Cream

On December 2, 2009, in Defective Drugs, Personal Injury, by K. Lindsay Rakers

The Journal of the American Academy of Neurology has linked various denture creams to excess amounts of zinc. Zinc poisoning can be deadly if not caught and treated quickly. Excess amounts of zinc can cause serious neurological side effects, including neuropathy. Neuropathy affects the hands and feet by causing weakness, numbness, tingling and even pain. Because zinc is an intestinal irritant, you may first experience vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhea and nausea. You may also experience low blood pressure, urine retention, jaundice, seizures, joint pain, fever, coughing or a metallic taste in your mouth.

If you are concerned that you may have been exposed to an excessive amount of zinc from your denture cream, please seek medical attention immediately. Your doctor can take a blood sample and test it for low copper levels and high zinc levels-both signs of zinc poisoning.
