Way to go Olivette Missouri! Just as University City Missouri recently decided, Olivette has made a decision to allow its residents to be a part of a domestic partnership registry. The city counsel approved this measure without opposition! The final vote will be at the next meeting. The registry will cost $45 to join and will simply recognize partnerships between unmarried adults as long as they are living together.
As a personal injury attorney, I all-too-often hear of circumstances where gay and lesbian individuals have lost a loved one or who help a severely injured loved one through an injury and then have their rights ignored. In jurisdictions like Olivette and University City, now gay and lesbian Missourians are one step closer to obtaining justice in the event of a personal injury. The law defines “spouse” in a very certain way and decisions like these give trial attorneys a solid argument that the rights of gays and lesbians, when it comes to loss of consortium claims (loss of services, companionship), should not be denied.
